The giant has awoken - The biggest protest in Brazil for the last 20 years
On the 18th June, millions of people in more than 80 Brazilian cities, across several states, came onto the street in peaceful protests. These protests were organized by social network campaigns (mainly facebook and twitter). The intention of these peaceful protests was to complain against the use of tax payers’ money on the preparation for the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic games. However, the protests extended to other complaints as well; people were complaining against the existing corruption in the country, the high inflation, bad public transport and social injustice. What started as a peaceful demonstration has evolved into violent protests, where many people were injured and some were even killed. Public buildings such as the Congress in Brasilia were vandalized, and burned down. The police have fought the riots with pepper spray and rubber bullets. The response from the government is still unknown, but the president Dilma Rousseff has already announced that she is taking the people concerns very seriously.

FORM 10 AND 11’S TRIP TO LONDON-UCAS CONVENTION
During the last week of February, some students from Form 10 and Form 11 went with Mr. Davidson to England to see fantastic Universities, from UCL (University College London), to Imperial University.
It was an amazing opportunity. Margarida Marques from Form 11 said, “It made me realize how much work students need to commit to in order to enter these amazing Universities; it is not easy at all, grades need to be really high.”
Sérgio Montês from Form 11 exclaimed, “This trip showed me how living in England is, and the experience of being a University student. I think I would adapt perfectly here, in this country, all by myself!”
Some students preferred the life on a campus; however, others preferred the life in the city. Carolina Leite said “I loved UCL because it is not a campus. I am a city girl and I would adapt perfectly in London, being the capital of England and one of the busiest cities in the world.”
Most of the students that participated in this trip are really devoted to studying hard in order to achieve their dream of entering their first choice University. A few students would like to go to Oxford University, and others to Warwick University, Surrey University, Imperial or Reading University for example, these ones being among the best ones in England at the moment.
Nuno Pacheco, a student of the Sciences, said that his dream was to enter Imperial College. Imperial University is really good for PhDs, or for Physics and Mathematics.
In the last two days of the trip, the students went to a UCAS convention where every single University was present with a little stand of their own, full of information about the University itself. It was an amazing opportunity to ask questions that students had in their mind to specific Universities. Example were: What are the grades needed to enter a certain University? What are the courses available?
“It was a very tiring trip, however, it was definitely worth it!” exclaimed Pratik Panthee, Form 11 student.
Form 10 and Form 11 students would like to thank Mr. Davidson for taking his personal time to go with them to England. They know he is a very busy man, but, at the end of the day, he wants his students to be successful.
